BODY ALIGNMENT, JOINT STABILITY & BACK PAIN

What makes Reformer Pilates so effective for back pain relief, is that it addresses the underlying structural imbalances in the body that lead to back pain. Issues like lack of core support, pelvic instability, muscular imbalances, poor posture, and lack of body awareness all affect back health. Correct alignment balances your skeleton so your muscles are held at their ideal length and optimal position, without tension allowing them to work more efficiently.

If your body is constantly held out of good alignment, it places a great strain on your muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia which all impacts the joints, this will reduce your body’s ability to react to the force of gravity, resulting in aches and pains and a restricted range of movement. Pilates gives you an opportunity to learn about optimal posture and can correct imbalances that will allow your muscles to work as efficiently as they should, helping to improve the stability of the joints.

As you progress throughout our sessions, you should find your range of movement increasing and your flexibility improving as well as a great improvement in your mobility and stability of the joints leading to injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Joseph Pilates once said “If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If you are flexible at 60, you are young.”

BUILD STRENGTH, ENDURANCE and FLEXIBILITY

We all want to achieve a strong, efficient body, but there must be a balance between strength and flexibility. Reformer Pilates is the perfect exercise regime to achieve this. Pilates is an amazing strength exercise creating a strong lean body, building muscle and regimenting muscle fibres, the more muscle we have, the more efficient the fat burning capacity our body has, also working with an outside resistance (springs) helps to build good bone density reducing the risk osteoporosis.

Pilates also uses dynamic & static stretching, it takes the eccentric contraction of muscles on their outward motion and brings the muscle under control on the downward motion which creates long lean, strong muscles. Pilates strengthens the whole body, targeting each muscle group evenly with a mixture of strength training and stretching. No body part is neglected, there is also an emphasis on creating a lasting mind to body connection and this allows for a greater appreciation for what your body can do.

Muscles are worked from many different directions, creating a uniformed, full body strength and tone. Over time, you will see your muscles gaining tone and looking sculpted, but you’ll also feel much stronger and more energised and in tune with your body. Tight muscles hinder your mobility and can lead to tension, aches, and pain, therefore, flexibility is essential for your overall fitness and vitality. It ensures a greater range of movement in your joints, and will, in turn, mean your joints remain healthy and fare better against normal wear and tear as they age

“In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see a difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body”

PRE/POST SURGERY & INJURY REHABILITATION

Pilates makes a good choice for people rehabilitating following various types of injuries or surgery. It addresses specific challenges that people face when recovering, as well as helping them gradually increase fitness at a time when they may otherwise be fairly sedentary.

Practicing Pilates before and after surgery offers so many benefits. Strengthening the joint and surrounding muscles pre-surgery will help the procedure go more smoothly. After surgery, you’ll learn the ways to use your new joint safely and effectively, helping correct any pre-surgery imbalances. Pilates before surgery will also help to strengthen the tissue surrounding the joint, as well as maintain the range of motion, and because there is little to no impact, the exercises are gentle and can be performed even where there is a deterioration of the joint.

Pilates addresses the body as a whole, working to strengthen the area around the joints while increasing range of motion, the rest of the body is targeted as an integrated system. Pilates also helps to speed up recovery by ensuring that the area around the joint is lengthened to assist with scar tissue.

“Change happens through movement and movement heals.”

BALANCED MIND & MENTAL WELLNESS

Pilates may assist in the treatment of depression and anxiety by offering an opportunity to socialise, changing the levels of chemicals in the brain (serotonin, cortisol and endorphins), providing a distraction from negative thoughts, releasing stress, enhancing mindfulness and helping to create a self-care routine. Stress and anxiety both affect the brain and further impact the body through nerve endings, so focusing on Pilates routines can help to improve mental control and alleviate the symptoms of anxiety on both mind and body.

Every time we move we use several specific areas of our brain. The brain then sends an impulse through the spinal cord to muscle fibres so when you learn to voluntarily engage certain muscles (like deep core activation in Pilates) you fire a movement chain that might have been asleep for a long time. A healthy nervous system means better communication between your brain and other parts of your body as well as the release of stress-fighting and mood-boosting hormones.

Pilates incorporates mindful movement which lets you concentrate your attention on one thing – your body. Whether you want to or not, you have to clear your mind of any distractions if you are performing Pilates coordination work on the Reformer or if you are just visualising the inner spring in your core that your instructor is talking about. Pilates lets you reap all the benefits of meditation and mindfulness through movement.

“Every moment of our life can be the beginning of great things.”
